CHELANFEST COMMUNITY KITCHEN
Creating a space for cooking, cleaning, and community for 100 DIY Festivalgoers
2019 was the third year of Chelanfest, a DIY music festival set in the hills above Chelan Washington. By year 3, we (the planning committee of ~15) had covered most of the basics: shelter, toilets, and the sound for the stage, and 2019 was the year to take in up a level.
In previous years, each campsite had it's own "kitchen". For some, this was a camp stove on the ground, and for others, it was a larger area shared amongst friends. The previous years these "kitchens" became a central gathering place (and also a target for small critters).
With these observations in mind, I set out to design a space where:
1. Everyone in Chelanfest would be welcome
2. There were dedicated areas to PREP food and STORE food
3. There was a dedicated area to WASH dishes, RECYCLE, and COMPOST
4. Festival Goers could share food and reduce waste.
Overall, the project was successful. In the future, I will not have such granular areas with the expectation someone moves down the line of tables. Instead, there will be 3 or 4 fully stocked prep and cook areas, as well as a dedicated cleaning section.

Designing and Creating Signs
Planning & Design:
Planned the Signs: Kitchen, Parking, Other: i.e. First Aid, Merch.
I Devised method for hanging the signs (Option B). An exception is the Walkie-Talkie which will have ONE eyelet to connect the sign to walkie talkie at the first aid station.
Executing a Vision with a Team
Most supplies were re-used (wood, paint). A team of 6 members of the Chelan Plan committee came together. All of the sign copy came from my design (see notebook below), and the painters took the liberty to add fun decorative flare.
